8 unusual and quirky places to stay in the UK this autumn

Autumn is the perfect time for a short break in the UK, before the cold winter weather hits. And if you’re looking for something beyond the usual hotel or cottage, there are plenty of unusual and quirky places to stay across the UK.

From treehouses to lighthouses, converted stations to castles, there are lots of ways to elevate your break from ordinary to extraordinary. Read on to discover eight of our favourite short breaks with a difference.

1. The Treehouses, Chewton Glen, Hampshire

Banish all thoughts of the little wooden huts in a tree you might have played in when you were younger. These treehouses are the height of luxury, secluded in the treetops of woodlands above the New Forest. These are a particularly attractive choice for autumn, as the leaves and foliage turn into the golds and reds of the season.

With hot tubs, underfloor heating, and breakfast delivered to your door, they’re the perfect retreat for a relaxing and unusual break. Choices include spaces just for two, family-friendly options, and even some dog-friendly treehouses so you don’t need to leave your pet behind.

2. The Old Railway Station, Petworth, West Sussex

The former Petworth Railway Station offers the last word in old-school glamour for a short stay with a difference.

Choose to stay in one of the beautifully restored Pullman railway carriages, or in the main station building itself. All of the rooms are en suite, with quirky features and nostalgic style, and your stay will include breakfast.

You can enjoy dinner in the Pullman Dining Car 1906 Princess Ena, the last of three Pullman carriages shipped over from America. Fully restored and resplendent, it offers you the opportunity to enjoy fine dining as only the very privileged could at the turn of the 20th century.

You can also enjoy autumn walks in the nearby South Downs, take a stroll around the beautiful market town of Petworth, or enjoy an event at the neighbouring Goodwood Racecourse.

3. Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages, Trevose Head, Cornwall

For an atmospheric stay with striking views of the Atlantic, you can choose one of four former lighthouse keepers’ cottages on the rugged headland near Padstow.

The lighthouse itself is still operational, but the cottages allow you to experience the beautiful, historic site while enjoying the convenience of modern holiday accommodation.

During your stay, you’ll be surrounded by magnificent open countryside and dramatic coastal scenery. Often quieter during the autumn months, the location is perfect for exploring the local area, wildlife spotting, or taking a trip to nearby Padstow.

4. Augill Castle, Cumbria

If you’ve ever wanted to live like royalty, this is your chance. Augill Castle in Cumbria is a 19th-century castle nestled at the heart of the Eden Valley.

With individually designed bedrooms and antique furnishings, it offers you all the beauty of historic elegance, combined with the convenience of modern amenities. Whether you choose the cosy garden suite or the opulent elegance of the grand bedrooms, you can enjoy a peaceful and comfortable stay.

5. Cley Windmill, Norfolk

This Grade II-listed 19th-century windmill has been fully restored, now offering beautiful and unusual rooms across the venue.

Overlooking the Cley marshes, the windmill offers spectacular panoramic views right across the coast, which are particularly striking during autumn.

Enjoy lunch or afternoon tea in the round dining room, curl up by the cosy open fire, and enjoy a tranquil stay at this historic retreat.

6. Malmaison Oxford, Oxfordshire

If you fancy a quirky alternative to a traditional city break, this former Victorian prison offers an abundance of eccentric character. Now converted into a boutique hotel, complete with original cell doors, high ceilings, and historic ironwork, it’s based right in the heart of Oxford, making it easy to escape and explore.

Previously HM Prison Oxford, the gaol housed inmates for more than 150 years. The former cells are now comfortable bedrooms, and the exercise yard has been transformed into social spaces.

The dining experience also offers a rich historical flavour, as the brasserie and bar occupy former prison space where exposed brick and preserved features serve as reminders of the building’s past .

7. The Ruin, North Yorkshire

This little Georgian folly overlooks a wooded gorge at Hackfall and offers beautiful views of the Yorkshire countryside.

Now richly restored and decorated, it offers you a comfortable and cosy interior, as well as a dramatic and striking exterior.

Perfectly situated for woodland walks and countryside hikes, it’s a particularly pretty place for autumn stays. Sleeps two, no dogs allowed.

8. The Witchery, Edinburgh

A gothic getaway situated near Edinburgh Castle, the Witchery is a theatrical hotel featuring four-poster beds and antique furnishings.

Nestled in a collection of historic buildings dating back to the 16th century, it offers lavish, indulgent suites with turreted staircases and candlelit interiors creating the perfect Halloween atmosphere.

Dine in the oak-panelled Original Dining Room or the Secret Garden Dining Room, where you’ll find traditional Scottish dishes which reflect the building’s history and heritage.
